The U. Enterprise and crew are summoned to investigate strange occurrences aboard the starship U. Tsiolkovsky , which has been monitoring the collapse of a red-orange star. Once aboard the troubled research vessel, the away team finds a ship littered with food, wine, discarded clothes, several frozen bodies and no survivors. Unknowingly, Geordi energizes back aboard the U. Enterprise carrying a contagious, deadly contaminant that begins to infect the entire Starfleet crew, making them feel and act as if they were intoxicated and mentally unstable.

The crew of the Enterprise is subjected to an exotic illness that drives them to unusual manic behavior, akin to a type of alcoholic intoxication. The USS Enterprise -D has been assigned to investigate a loss of contact with the SS Tsiolkovsky , which had been assigned to observe the final days of a dying red supergiant star. Opening communications, the Enterprise bridge crew hear a woman speaking in a seductive voice. In confusion, Data requests for the woman to repeat her message, in which she states that a huge 'blowout' is about to occur.
